HC pulls up DGP for assault on person by Bokaro police

Ranchi: Jharkhand high court (HC) on Tuesday pulled up the director general of police, Tadasha Mishra, for the alleged assault by police on the relative of a woman whose daughter has been missing since 2025. The court questioned the DGP as to why criminal action should not be initiated against Bokaro superintendent of police (SP) Harvinder Singh in the matter.A division bench headed by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad was hearing a petition of habeas corpus filed by one Rekha Devi, a resident of Bokaro, whose daughter went missing in 2025. Her counsel informed the court that her uncle-in-law was picked up by the Bokaro police and tortured in custody. The person suffered serious injuries due to the assault by the police, for which he is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Ranchi. The court, after having heard the matter in the first half, directed the DGP to appear before the bench at 3:30 pm.Mishra, appeared thereafter before the court through virtual mode, upon which the court questioned her as to why criminal action should not be initiated against Bokaro SP for assaulting the relative of the petitioner. The court expressed its sheer annoyance in the matter and directed Mishra to furnish a detailed report pertaining to the assault on the victim. The court ordered the DGP to again appear on April 9 before the bench with the report.
