IIT Dhanbad Empowers Tribal Students with IT Skills: Capacity Building Program Underway

Dhanbad: In a step towards bridging the digital divide, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad rolled out the next phase of its capacity-building programme on basic and advanced IT skills for tribal students in Jharkhand, with end-semester examinations and hands-on training underway from April 8 to 10.The initiative, supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt of India, is being implemented by the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering under the Centre for Excellence. Students of Classes X, XI and XII from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) — a flagship scheme aimed at providing quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe students in remote areas — are participating in the assessment phase.Participants have been drawn from EMRS Kathijoria, Tasaria, Basia, Torsinduri, Salgadih and Kujra, officials said, adding that the evaluation combines theory tests with intensive practical exposure.Prof Rashmi Singh, who is leading the programme, said the effort is focused on making students future-ready. “This programme is designed not just to teach basic computer skills, but to build confidence among students to use technology meaningfully in their academic and professional journeys,” she said. She added that the structured curriculum ensures a gradual progression from foundational to advanced competencies. “We are bridging the gap between digital literacy and employable skills. The hands-on training component is crucial as it allows students to apply what they learn in real-world scenarios,” Prof Singh said. The programme includes modules on computer fundamentals, tally and python programming, along with advanced training in MS Access, MS Project and advanced accounting tools. Faculty members said the curriculum was tailored to align with both higher education requirements and industry expectations.A dedicated training and evaluation team is overseeing examinations, monitoring learning outcomes and interacting with school authorities to gather feedback.Officials said the initiative reflects IIT (ISM)’s broader push towards inclusive growth through education, aiming to equip tribal youth with skills needed to participate in an increasingly digital economy.
