Can Bokaro Steel Plant's Hydrogen Injection Technology Revolutionize Emission Reduction in Steel Manufacturing?

Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant has signed an agreement with Forbes Marshall Private Limited on Tuesday to implement hydrogen gas injection technology in its blast furnace-1 under the Union govt’s ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’.“Bokaro will become the first plant under SAIL to roll out a pilot initiative using hydrogen injection, aimed at reducing carbon emissions in steel manufacturing,” Manikant Dhan, BSL chief of communication, said.Traditionally, steel production relies heavily on coal and other carbon-intensive fuels, resulting in high carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Under the new system, hydrogen will be used as a cleaner reducing agent, partially replacing carbon. This is expected to significantly lower emissions and improve environmental performance, he added. The initiative aligns with the vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the COP26 climate summit, where India committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 under the ‘Panchamrit’ strategy. The focus included reducing the carbon footprint of core sectors like steel.BSL officials believe the move will not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also enhance the global standing of India’s steel industry. The adoption of hydrogen-based technologies is seen as a crucial step towards building a cleaner, future-ready industrial ecosystem.
