Jhalsa provides aid to survivor of witch-hunting

Sanjay Sahay /TNNRanchi: Taking cognisance of the killing of 65-year-old man Palu Khadia for alleged witchcraft in Gumla district, Jharkhand State Legal Service Authority (Jhalsa) on Friday sent its team to provide financial and legal aid to his wife.Khadia was beaten to death on Wednesday night by a neighbour, Bahura Oraon, after a local sorcerer told him that his relatives were ailing due to witchcraft practised by the victim and his wife, Sugi Devi. Bahura also attacked Sugi during the incident, but she managed to escape.Jharkhand high court judge-cum-Jhalsa executive chairman Justice S N Prasad asked officials to take immediate action in the case.Jhalsa stated that a team comprising para legal volunteers along with administrative officials visited Sugi and handed her a sum of Rs 20,000 as interim relief. The team asked the administration to provide full security to the survivor.Moreover, the process for providing her compensation under the victim’ ‘s compensation scheme was also initiated. The team also provided food and other essential materials to the widow.
