JMM seeks poll panel directives for smooth SIR workflow
Voters get mapped at a booth in Ranchi

Ranchi: JMM on Saturday wrote to the Election Commission to issue a clear and uniform circular to all officials to ensure a uniform workflow across the state during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.JMM central general secretary Vinod Pandey, in a letter, flagged a few questions seeking clarifications in public interest. “Under the SIR, can necessary documents be collected during the household enumeration phase from voters whose status is flagged as ‘anomaly’ or ‘unmapped’? If document collection is permitted, have clear and uniform instructions been issued in this regard to all DEOs, EROs, AEROs, and BLOs? We request a clarification on this matter, necessary guidelines to all concerned officials,” he wrote. He added that during the SIR exercise in Bihar, a system was adopted to collect and record necessary documents during the household enumeration phase itself. “This ensured that voters did not face unnecessary hardships later, making the revision effective and transparent,” he said. The plea comes at a time when the Ranchi administration started special camps over the weekend to boost mapping ahead of the SIR. The mapping of voters with the SIR exercise held in 2003 has been poor across various places in the state capital till June 5, with the figure touching 48%.

What is the main reason for low voter mapping turnout in Ranchi?

With the special drive on June 6 and 7, the figure barely crossed 50% which, according to both the district administration and EC officials, is far below the saturation level of over 78% across the state. Therefore, the district administration again organised special voter mapping camps on Saturday and Sunday.“The special drive for mapping voters is going on in areas where the figures have not reached the saturation level,” state chief electoral officer (CEO), K Ravi Kumar, said on Saturday.“It is the general apathy of urban voters towards electoral processes,” deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri said on Saturday. The list of unmapped voters in the state was published on May 23, and according to the EC, they can get themselves mapped till June 15. A total of 14,03,354 voters have been mapped across the state since May 23.
