Ranchi: Four products from the state — Bhagaiya silk, Kuchai silk, Munda jewellery and bamboo craft — have secured geographical indication (GI) status, Nabard officials said on Sunday.Nabard said that the GI tag was a major step towards preservation and promotion of the state’s unique traditional heritage and will help protect authenticity of products, improve their market visibility and enable producers to command premium value for their products.Nabard stated, “The recognition of Bhagaiya silk and Kuchai silk brings national attention to Jharkhand’s rich sericulture tradition. These silk varieties, deeply rooted in local knowledge systems and indigenous craftsmanship, represent generations of skill passed down within rural communities.”Nabard added that the GI recognition accorded to Munda jewellery highlights the distinctive artistic traditions of the Munda community, which is characterised by unique motifs, craftsmanship and cultural significance.The inclusion of bamboo craft further acknowledges the creativity and craftsmanship of rural artisans who transform locally available resources into a wide range of utility and decorative products.Chief general manager of Nabard regional office, Deepmala Ghosh, stated, “The four products represent the state’s rich traditional knowledge, craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The GI registration not only provides recognition and commercial value to such products but also encourages younger generations to continue these traditional crafts, thereby ensuring their preservation.”She further said that Nabard has been actively promoting these products through exhibitions, rural haats, buyer-seller meets and other marketing platforms, adding that GI registration will further strengthen their market presence while benefiting artisan communities.Nabard stated that it will continue its efforts to facilitate GI tags for traditional products, strengthen their rural value chains and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
