Railway staff in East Singhbhum injured in elephant attack

Jamshedpur: An employee of the railways was critically injured after being attacked by an elephant near a railway crossing in East Singhbhum district. Sanjiv Sinha, the employee, was first admitted to the Chakulia community health centre (CHC) but was later referred to a hospital in Jhargram in West Bengal, forest officials said.Sinha, a resident of Kachua in West Bengal, was posted at the Sunsunia level crossing as a lineman. He was attacked around 11:30 am. Forester Sujit Hansda said, “The exact cause of the incident is still being verified”. However, preliminary reports suggest that he was performing his duties when one of the elephants from a herd of about a dozen attacked him.“The herd was crossing the railway tracks when the incident occurred. The level crossing is in a forested area where elephants frequently move across the railway line,” Hansda. “The matter is being investigated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the attack, especially as it occurred in broad daylight,” Hansda added.“Bystanders mustered the courage to rescue the victim and rushed him to the CHC before alerting forest officials,” another forest official said.
