Dhanbad launches fire safety audit of public units

Dhanbad: A day after an inferno raged through a ‘residential’ complex housing a coaching institute in Lucknow, the Dhanbad administration on Tuesday launched a fire safety review of educational institutions, coaching centres, hospitals, commercial establishments like hotels, residential apartments, and other public establishments across the district, especially those located in densely populated and crowded areas, in a phased manner.District police and fire services department officials will check if buildings are equipped with fire alarm systems, adequate and functional fire fighting systems, proper emergency exits and evacuation arrangements. The teams will also assess if the institutions are following mandatory safety protocols to facilitate the safe evacuation of occupants in the event of a fire and if staff members have received adequate fire safety training and are aware of emergency response procedures. Electrical wiring systems and measures taken to prevent short circuits will also be covered in the drive, sources said.SSP Prabhat Kumar said, “Institutions found lacking in prescribed fire safety standards would be directed to rectify deficiencies within a stipulated period. In cases where serious negligence is detected or corrective measures are not taken within the given timeframe, legal action will be initiated as per the provisions of law.”“Fire safety is not a mere formality but directly linked to human lives. The joint inspection will continue on a regular basis across the district,” the SSP said.
