55-year-old woman trampled to death by elephant in Koderma as forest department tracks roaming herd

Koderma: A 55-year-old woman was trampled to death early Thursday in Tetriyadih village under Domchanch police station limits. According to family members, she had gone for a routine walk in the field around 5am when she unexpectedly encountered an elephant. “She tried to run but in vain. The elephant crushed her on the spot,” a relative said. The fatality comes after two days of destruction by a roaming herd of three elephants across several villages. On Tuesday, elephants entered Golgo village, demolishing farmers’ homes and flattening crops, causing losses worth lakhs of rupees. By Wednesday night, the herd had moved to Dhurodih village, breaking boundary walls and leaving residents terrified.Ranger Ravindra Kumar said the department has been tracking the herd since it entered Koderma. “Teams searched multiple sectors in Domchanch throughout Wednesday night to intercept them,” he said.Divisional forest officer (DFO) Saumitra Shukla said the department is on high alert. “We are deploying all available resources to safely drive the herd back into deeper forest zones. Continuous monitoring is in place to prevent further incidents,” he said.
