Bokaro: A district-led initiative to improve mobility for differently abled persons has transformed lives in Bokaro, with over 112 assistive devices distributed so far through a special support pool created by the administration. On Wednesday, 16 beneficiaries received battery-operated tricycles, with deputy commissioner Ajay Nath Jha saying the effort aims to boost independence, dignity and participation in daily life. The initiative began on July 11, 2025, when 32-year-old orthopedically challenged Suresh Pandey approached the DC’s Janta Darbar seeking a battery-operated tricycle. Struggling with mobility for years, his case drew immediate attention. Jha personally interacted with him and assured prompt help. Within 48 hours, Pandey received the tricycle.“As more people came forward, it became clear that accessible mobility was a pressing need,” an official said. Many beneficiaries were unable to even reach the collectorate due to physical constraints, prompting officials to step outside and receive applications. To scale up support, the administration roped in industries across steel, coal, power, petroleum, gas and cement sectors. Companies contributed vehicles to a common pool, leading to the distribution of 62 battery-operated tricycles, 49 Divyang scooties and one artificial limb so far. Around Rs 91 lakh has been spent by the industries, with more vehicles in the pipeline. For beneficiaries, the impact has been life-changing. One recipient from a poor family said the tricycle enabled him to start home tuition classes and earn independently. “It gave me confidence and self-respect,” he said.In another case, Chas resident Raghunath Gorai, who lost both legs in an accident, received both a tricycle and disability pension within hours of appealing at the Janta Darbar.“These are not just schemes, but steps towards dignity and self-reliance,” Jha said, adding that empathy and swift administrative action can significantly change lives.
