JSR cops fine 110 drunk drivers in 48-hr crackdown

Jamshedpur: Two days after the state govt replaced East Singhbhum SSP Piyush Pandey post the DD Bar murder case, the city police have launched an aggressive crackdown on drunk driving and nightlife violations.A total of 110 motorists driving under the influence were fined Rs 11 lakh in total after they failed breath analyser tests at checkpoints set up across the city during late-night drives on July 4 and 5. Another 25 vehicles were impounded for traffic and document-related violations, officials said. The operation was monitored by newly appointed SSP Ehtesham Waqarib, SP (City) Lalit Meena and other senior officers, who supervised checking at several nakas till the early hours. The intensified enforcement comes amid mounting pressure on the police to restore public confidence after the murder outside DD Bar on July 2.SSP Waqarib has directed all police station in-charges to maintain strict vigil on bars, pubs and other late-night establishments, with focus on preventing drunken brawls, reckless driving and criminal activities around entertainment hubs. The district administration has also tightened tabs on bars and pubs. Teams from the administration have been conducting inspections to verify licences, excise permissions and other mandatory documents required to operate such establishments.Waqarib said, “The anti-drunk driving campaign would continue over the coming weeks and not remain a one-off exercise.”Besides checking motorists under the influence, police have been asked to strengthen late-night patrolling, intensify surveillance around commercial nightlife zones and ensure stricter enforcement of traffic and public safety regulations.
