Jamshedpur: A 29-year-old pregnant woman admitted for delivery at the Sadar Hospital in Seraikela-Kharsawan district died on Sunday, triggering protests by relatives and a probe by the administration.Family members of Shuru Purty, a resident of Kandagora village, accused the doctor on duty of negligence and demanded an inquiry and strict action against those responsible for her death. Her husband, Gura Purty, said he admitted Shuru to the hospital on Saturday evening.Gura alleged the doctor on duty administered two injections to his wife, after which she was not properly monitored through the night. During a medical examination on Sunday morning, the doctor declared her dead.He further alleged that immediately after informing the family about the death, the doctor pressured them to take the body home without delay. He claimed the family was asked to sign certain documents and that an ambulance was hastily arranged to shift the body from the ward.Gura also alleged that timely treatment or referral to a higher medical facility could have saved both the mother and her unborn child. He refuted the hospital’s claim that relatives were informed at night, saying neither he nor any family member was told about her critical condition or the need for referral. The doctor denied the allegations. She said Shuru was suffering from severe anaemia caused by critically low haemoglobin levels. She said the patient’s critical condition was conveyed to the sahiya during the night, and she had advised that the woman be referred to a higher medical centre.Subdivisional officer (SDO) of Seraikela, Abhinav Prakash, said a medical board would investigate the matter. “If the inquiry finds negligence on the part of the hospital led to the death, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.
