CBI searches wrong house in Jamshedpur during cyber fraud probe
CBI officers and local police outside the Sakchi residence on Tuesday

Jamshedpur: An early morning raid by CBI sleuths at a Sakchi residence on Tuesday for suspected cyber fraud turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. After questioning the homeowner and others, the central agency officers later realised that they had knocked on the wrong door. The homeowner later demanded action for such harassment. The mix-up unfolded when a CBI team arrived at the residence of Jasbir Singh in Tuiladungri around 6:30 am as part of a wider cyber fraud investigation spanning multiple locations in the city. Acting on leads linked to bank accounts and mobile SIM cards allegedly used in the fraud, officers entered the house, identified themselves and began what appeared to be a routine search.“They checked bank documents, Aadhaar and PAN cards, mobile phones, computers and even sought my son’s documents,” Jasbir recalled. Only after a detailed verification exercise did the officers realise they were at the wrong address. The team apologised before leaving. While one team was busy correcting its navigation error, another CBI unit was carrying out a search in nearby Saraswati Nagar. A youth, identified as Rajdeep, was detained and questioned after investigators found that a SIM card allegedly used to open a bank account linked to the cyber fraud case was registered in his name.Sources said the agency is probing possible links between bank accounts, SIM cards and other documents suspected to have been used in the fraud network.Ranchi-based spokesperson for CBI, Thakur Das, said the agency would brief the media if and when there is any development, while Golmuri police refused to speak on the operation.
