135 home guards at JSR med college without salaries since March

Jamshedpur: A video of a woman home guard breaking down over financial distress and fears of an uncertain future went viral on Saturday, bringing to light the plight of 135 home guards deployed at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), who allegedly have not been paid salaries since March.A woman home guard allegedly tried to kill herself by consuming phenyl on July 10. In her statement to hospital authorities, she cited severe financial stress, saying she was unable to pay the school fees of her son for four months. She also claimed she lacked the money to arrange medical treatment for her ailing mother.“Four months is a long time. We are struggling to pay children’s school fees, buy books, pay rent and even arrange food. It has become difficult to afford the daily commute to hospital for duty,” said home guard Akhilesh Singh.Another home guard, Digvijay Pandey, said the govt should understand how difficult it is for employees to survive without salaries for such a long period.MGMMCH principal Dr Sanjay Kumar said the hospital administration had a limited role in resolving the issue. “I am regularly taking up the matter with higher authorities and was assured that funds will be released soon,” he said.Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy also raised the issue with health minister Irfan Ansari on Saturday. Roy said the minister assured him that the salaries would be released at the earliest.
