Jamshedpur: The wait for tap water supply in households in the Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) area has been prolonged yet again, with the ambitious Adityapur Drinking Water Supply Project missing another deadline.While around two lakh residents living within the AMC limits are now expected to receive a partial water supply by the end of July, the project is likely to become fully operational only after another six months.In the first phase, nearly 20,000 households in the Adityapur-II area will receive water from the 30 MLD (million litres per day) water treatment plant at Sitarampur Dam, located about 3.5 km from NIT Jamshedpur. The supply was originally scheduled to begin on July 15, but the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO) and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (DWSD) failed to meet the target because of supply chain bottlenecks.Reviewing the project’s progress on Monday, Seraikela-Kharsawan deputy commissioner Nitish Kumar Singh directed officials to remove all hurdles delaying its execution. “Resolve all hurdles delaying the project at the earliest and expedite the execution of the work,” he told officials.AMC city manager Debashish Pradhan on Tuesday said efforts were underway to complete the project at the earliest.“Acquiring forest land for the Sapra treatment plant took a lot of time, but we have nearly resolved the issue. We expect the project to be completed by late Dec or early Jan,” Pradhan said.The foundation stone of the Rs 395-crore drinking water project was laid in Feb 2019, with the original completion target set for March 2022.

Under the project, two 30 MLD water treatment plants at Sitarampur Dam will treat and pump water to four overhead storage reservoirs serving the Adityapur-II area. At present, one of the treatment plants is nearing completion and is expected to become operational soon.A separate 60 MLD water treatment plant under construction at Sapra, around 12 km from Adityapur, will supply water to seven overhead storage reservoirs catering to the Adityapur-I area.Nearly 500 km of pipeline is being laid across all 32 wards of the municipal corporation to provide piped water connections to every household in the command area.Currently, around 10,000 of the 54,000 households in the AMC area receive water supplied by the DWSD. Once the project is completed, all 54,000 households are expected to get a regular daily tap water supply.
