Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan has directed traffic police, transport department and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take corrective measures on accident-prone stretches of NH-33 and other roads across the district.At a District Traffic Management and Road Safety Committee meeting on Saturday, Ranjan asked NHAI to install speed guns on identified stretches of the Pardih-Baharagora section of NH-33. Officials were directed to monitor speeding vehicles and take action against violators.NHAI was also told to survey potholes and damaged portions of the nearly 100-km highway stretch passing through East Singhbhum and undertake repairs to prevent waterlogging and reduce accident risks.

DSP (traffic) Sriniraj Kumar was asked to conduct regular drives against unauthorised roadside parking by heavy, commercial and private vehicles along the highway and penalise offenders.Ranjan said road construction department executive engineer Deepak Sahay had been directed to install a convex mirror and traffic signs near Salgajhari Hanuman temple. The department was also asked to repair the Dimna Chowk-Dimna lake stretch and install appropriate signboards.Officials identified wrong-side driving, speeding, drunk driving and failure to wear helmets or seat belts as major causes of accidents. The DC called for stricter enforcement and directed officials to suspend or cancel driving licences in serious cases, besides imposing fines.The committee reviewed 24 road accidents reported in June, in which 11 people were killed and 15 injured.Traffic police and transport officials said 475 driving licences were suspended during the month and fines amounting to Rs 27.25 lakh were collected for traffic violations. The department also issued 3,530 learner’s licences and 1,521 permanent driving licences in June.
