Daltonganj: A screening for tuberculosis among inmates of the central jail in Daltonganj was conducted on Sunday using two portable X-ray machines, Palamu civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Srivastava said.“A jail inmate may have symptoms such as cough and fever for two weeks, weight loss, sweating at night, blood-stained sputum. He/ she can be easily screened for tuberculosis with the help of portable X-ray machines. The results are directly loaded in the computer for diagnosis,” the civil surgeon said.Jail superintendent (in-charge) Anant Kumar Jha said, “We have over 800 inmates at present. We have earmarked two Sundays for screening them,” adding, “over 800 inmates underwent the screening in the jail on Sunday.”Sources said this was the first attempt to screen inmates of the central jail.The civil surgeon said that a jail inmate who tests positive for tuberculosis is entitled to Rs 1,000 per month for six months for treatment.
