Jamshedpur: Officers of the Indian Army’s ‘explosive ordnance disposal’ (EOD) squad detonated the US-made AN-M64 500-pound bomb belonging to the ‘World War II-era’ on the banks of the Subarnarekha river at Panipada in Baharagora on Wednesday in a controlled way, police said. The bomb was discovered by villagers on April 15 when they were fishing in the river.Led by Captain Ayush Kumar Singh and guided by Lt Col Dharmendra Singh, the specialised team analysed the AN-M64 500lb bomb and conducted a technical survey of the explosion site before proceeding with the detonation. The squad on Tuesday did aerial mapping of 1-km radius of the designated site and implemented safety measures in the surrounding areas. The officer in-charge of the Baharagora police station, Shankar Prasad Kushwaha, said, “Villagers living inside 1km of the site were urged to shift to a safer location. Traffic movement on the Jharkhand-Bengal border (NH-33 and part of the NH-18) was prohibited for two hours. A 10ft pit was dug on the river bank and the 227-kg explosive was placed in it. The pit was encased with 100 sand-filled gunny bags to curb the impact of the explosion. On March 25, two similar bombs were detonated on the bank of Subarnarekha.
