Undertrial prisoner dies by suicide on MGMMCH campus

The company said that it deeply mourns the unfortunate event

Jamshedpur: An undertrial prisoner died of suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Friday.The deceased Ashok Kumar, 39, was an inmate at Ghaghidih central jail. “A resident of Chowka police station in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Kumar was accused of killing his son and wife on November 18, 2024,” Sachin Das, the officer-in-charge of MGM police station, said.He had been admitted to MGMMCH on April 19 for treatment to his injuries when attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a blade. Hospital sources said Kumar was battling depression and was due to be shifted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi for treatment.Kumar, hospital sources said, gave the security guards a slip during his health check-up, which is mandatory before shifting a patient to another hospital. He was killed on the spot. The principal of MGMMCH and its medical superintendent did not respond to TOI’s calls when contacted.Two other patients committed suicide on the hospital premises between August last year and March this year.
