Tough Mumbai test awaits Jamshedpur FC at home

After earning a point in their last match against Mohun Bagan Super Giant with a stoppage-time goal, Jamshedpur FC will be hoping to deliver a dominant performance when they host table-toppers Mumbai City FC at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Thursday. After struggling to make the playoffs last season, Owen Coyle’s men have fared reasonably well in this truncated edition of Indian Super League (ISL) so far and are currently fourth in the table, with four wins from seven matches. They have drawn two and lost one. With 14 points, they are level with Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC but remain fourth due to an inferior goal difference. However, Mumbai City will pose a very different challenge for the Red Miners. Currently at the top of the table with 17 points, Mumbai are unbeaten in the tournament and head into the game on the back of a 1-0 win over Odisha FC at home. And Coyle knows it’s not going to be an easy outing at all despite playing at home. “Winning the Shield proves you are the best team over a long period, not just a few games. Mumbai have been outstanding since 2020, and they sit at the top on merit,” said the coach during the pre-match press conference on Wednesday.Despite sounding pleased with the team’s physical and mental strength, the coach, however, wants them to improve in several other areas. “We can improve our effectiveness from set-pieces — better delivery and movement in the box,” said Coyle. It’s important to note that even though JFC have grabbed four wins, they have scored just eight goals in seven matches. What has helped is that their defence has been solid, conceding just five goals.More importantly, they have been consistent, and Mumbai coach Petr Kratky is aware of the test that awaits his team at the Furnace.“We expect a very competitive game. At the same time, we are confident in our preparation, the quality within the group, and the way the team has been working together,” said Kratky.Having said that, he will be slightly worried about JFC’s dominance over Mumbai. Even last season, Jamshedpur won both their matches, including a 3-0 away victory, and Serbian defender Lazar Cirkovic is taking a lot of confidence from it.“It’s a very important game. We haven’t won in the last few matches, so we want to get back to winning ways, especially at home,” said Cirkovic during the press conference. “Mumbai are a strong team, but we respect ourselves because we know how hard we work every day. We are ready and looking forward to the game.”
