Ranchi: As many as 16 Maoists, several of them associated with CPI (Maoist) central committee member Misri Besra’s squad, are set to lay down arms at the state police headquarters on Tuesday, officers said.The surrender will take place under the state govt’s Operation Navjeevan, which seeks to rehabilitate armed cadres and bring them into the mainstream. The function will be held in the presence of DGP Tadasha Mishra.Police said the 16 Maoists face a total of 425 cases. Six of them carry state govt rewards amounting to Rs 39 lakh.Police said this would be the second-largest surrender by Maoists in Jharkhand this year. In May, 25 Maoists and two JJPM members had surrendered.Among those expected to surrender is regional committee member Santosh, alias Basudeo Das, who had served as Besra’s bodyguard. He is wanted in 128 cases and carries a reward of Rs 15 lakh.Zonal committee member Chandan Lohra, who faces 78 cases and carries a reward of Rs 10 lakh, is also on the list. Sub-zonal committee members Anil Turi and Suhlal Birijia, wanted in 22 and 12 cases, respectively, carry rewards of Rs 5 lakh each.Two other Maoists, Sudesh Hoinhaag and Risiv, face 33 and 18 cases, respectively. Each carries a reward of Rs 2 lakh, police said.The cadres are expected to surrender 11 firearms — six Insas rifles, two AK-47 rifles, an HK-33 rifle, a US carbine and an M-16 rifle — besides 38 magazines and 1,562 rounds of ammunition.Separately, eight Maoists, most of them associated with the Besra group, are expected to surrender in neighbouring Chhattisgarh. They have been identified as Ashwin, Sohan Ponem, Rita, Anusha Kunjaam, Rajni Mudkam, Rahat Madwi, Subni and Jelani.
