Jamshedpur: Two interns of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) drowned in Dimna lake early on Friday, police said. The deceased were identified as Sameer Kumar, 25, a resident of Daltonganj, and Saksham Singh, 24, from Kashidih in Sakchi.Police said Sameer, Saksham and Yash Kumar, 24, went to the lake for an outing shortly after midnight. Preliminary investigation suggests Saksham entered the water for a dip and dropped his mobile phone into the lake. While trying to retrieve it, he moved into deeper water and began drowning.Seeing Saksham in distress, Sameer jumped in to rescue him, but was swept away by the strong currents and drowned. Yash then entered the lake to save both friends, but water levels and currents prevented him from locating them. A trained swimmer, Yash was nearly swept away before managing to return safely to shore, police officers said. He immediately alerted college authorities, who informed police.Officer-in charge of Bodam police station, Niraj Kumar, however, said that Sameer’s mobile phone was found in his pocket, indicating that he entered the lake to rescue his friend. Following a four-hour search operation, rescuers recovered the two bodies.“Both the bodies were retrieved,” said Nazrul Bari, a trained diver from Tata Steel who participated in the rescue operation.The bodies have been sent to the MGMMCH for post-mortem examination. “Until the report comes, we cannot confirm the exact cause of death,” said the OC.MGMMCH superintendent Dr Balram Jha clarified that none of the three interns was assigned emergency duty on Tuesday night. The incident left classmates and faculty members shocked.
