Jamshedpur: The outbreak of vector-borne diseases in Potka block of East Singhbhum continued, with health officials detecting 26 fresh cerebral malaria cases and 18 malaria cases during intensified screening on Tuesday.Officials said no fatalities were reported during the day. However, 44 people tested positive after 507 residents were screened across affected villages. The latest cerebral malaria cases come in addition to 24 cases detected between June 25 and June 29. Four people have died of the disease in the past four days, raising concern in the district administration and health department.Malaria screening camps were held in Sabar Nagar, Kandar, Jojogora, Gamhirkucha, Chhota Ramgarh, Kundrukocha, Jharia, Tangrain and several other villages. Patients testing positive were given anti-malarial medicines immediately at the camps.The health department has decided to extend the screening drive beyond Potka to Ghatsila, Dumaria and Musaboni blocks. “Each team, comprising 25 health workers will be stationed in each block for two days to conduct health check-ups,” said civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pall.The department has also sought additional doctors from MGM Medical College and Hospital to strengthen the camps.
