Two die of snakebites in Gumla, toll rises to 8 since Feb

Gumla: Two persons, including a 46-year-old woman and a teenager, died in separate snakebite incidents in Gumla district on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.Dashri Devi, a resident of Madhuban Toli under Kasira village in Gumla sadar police station limits, was sleeping on the floor of her house with the rest of her family members when she was bitten by a venomous snake. “She was taken to the Gumla Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared her dead around 4 am,” Dashri’s son Dinesh said.In a separate incident, 17-year-old Michael Tirkey died after being bitten by a snake at Belgaon Karamtoli village under Basia police station limits. Michael, a student of St Joseph School in Basia, was sleeping on the floor when the snake bit him. He passed his matriculation examination this year.Dr Anupam Kishore, deputy medical superintendent of Gumla Sadar Hospital, said, “Eight people from different age groups died of snakebites in the district since February this year.”
