Heavy police deployment, low-key celebrations mark Hul Diwas in Bhognadih
Tribal people head to the memorial in Bhognadih to pay tributes to the heroes of Santhal Hul rebellion

Dumka: The 171st Santhal Hul Day celebrations at Bhognadih village in Sahibganj district was a low-key affair on Tuesday after the district administration denied permission for large gatherings citing security concerns after last year’s violence.Politicians cutting across party lines, govt officials and locals paid tributes to Sidho, Kanhu, Chand, Bhairav, Fulo and Jhano, the siblings who led the 1855 rebellion against the British colonial rule and the exploitative zamindari and moneylending system amid heavy police deployment.Unlike previous years, no govt function was organised. In 2025, several people were injured in a clash with the police and a section of villagers, including the descendants of the revolutionaries. Mandal Murmu, a direct descendant of Sido and Kanhu, sought the administration’s permission to organise a programme but was denied. He was, however, allowed to perform customary rituals and offer tributes at the memorial.“No administrative programme was organised on Hul Diwas at Bhognadih this year owing to previous year’s incident. However, people paid tributes to the revolutionaries in large numbers,” Sahibganj sub-divisional officer Amar John Aind said.
