Ranchi: JMM, which governs the state in an alliance with Congress and RJD, on Friday objected to the grand old party’s move to name a candidate on one of the two seats for the June 18 Rajya Sabha election. On Thursday night, Congress named Pranav Jha as its candidate and said that the INDIA bloc is confident of winning both the seats.Congress’ move, however, led chief minister Hemant Soren to convene a meeting of all JMM legislators on Friday to chalk out further modalities. “Everyone has unanimously decided to field (JMM) candidates on both the seats. But at the same time, any final decision has to be taken by the CM. MLAs and the party authorised him to take a final call. The last date of filing nominations is June 8 and we will clear the air by then,” JMM central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya told the media on Friday evening.Congress, on the other hand, defended their move and hoped that both JMM and other constituents of INDIA bloc will support them so that the alliance could win both seats. In the morning, Cong candidate Jha reached Ranchi and attended slew of meetings with party workers and MLAs along with Jharkhand affairs in-charge K Raju. “There are two seats which are going to polls and INDIA bloc will win both seats,” Raju reiterated.Last week, Raju and other Congress office-bearers met Hemant to stake claim on one seat. The CM sought a few days to announce his decision. “However, the CM has made no clear communication to our central leaders. We had natural claim on one seat, being an alliance partner, with 16 MLAs. The central leadership has decided to name candidate on one seat,” said a Congress spokesperson in Ranchi.Bhattacharya, however, accused Congress of jumping the gun. “Even if talks were underway, any final decision has to be taken by the CM as he is the captain of this ship. One can’t claim to be an alliance partner and go on taking arbitrary decisions,” he said, citing how during Bihar election too, JMM were “humiliated” in the seat-sharing deal.Considering the 56 MLAs in the ruling coalition, it has sufficient numbers to win both seats. However, if JMM announces its candidates on the two seats, Congress, with 16 MLAs, will likely fail to win one as it would need 28 first-preference seats.Congress spokesperson Lal Kishore Shahdeo hoped that everything will fall in place as the election nears. “Now that we have announced our candidate, there is no question of going back. Having said this, there is still time for nomination and withdrawal. Our aim is to ensure that INIDA bloc fights together and wins to block the BJP,” he said.
