After violence over land, fishing row breaks out between 2 groups in Palamu village

Daltonganj: Weeks after a clash over land left one dead and four injured, tensions flared again at Rampur village in Palamu district over fishing rights in a local water body, prompting police intervention on Friday.Police rushed to the spot following a call from Manoj Singh, who claimed that his fish were being stolen by members of another group. Singh named Dharamdeo Chowdhury and his associates in his complaint. However, upon reaching the water body, police found no evidence of any fishing activity. “There were no fishing nets, no fish taken out, nor any containers to collect fish,” said Chainpur police station officer in-charge Lalji. A few mobile phones and motorcycles believed to have been abandoned by people who fled on spotting the police, were recovered.Chowdhury denied entering the water body and asserted his own claim over both the reservoir and its fish, police said.Based on Singh’s complaint, an inquiry has been initiated, but police clarified that no FIR will be registered unless allegations are substantiated. The district fisheries office has been asked to verify the status and ownership of the water body.Sources said the fresh dispute has further deepened mistrust between two groups in Rampur, where tensions are high since the May 23 firing incident over land. The deceased belonged to Chowdhury’s group.Police said 17 people were named accused in the incident, of whom three are in custody, including key accused Mantu Singh. In view of the situation, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS have been imposed in the village till June 30.
