Bear attack kills man in Ramgarh forest
Bateshwar Paswan, forest range officer, hands over compensation to the family of Hari Manjhi

Ramgarh: A 40-year-old man was killed in a bear attack in a forest under Mandu block of Ramgarh district late on Tuesday, forest officials said on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Hari Manjhi.He had ventured into the forest to search for his missing cattle, they said. Officials said Manjhi sustained multiple grievous injuries. Villagers from nearby Murramtola rescued him and rushed him to Sadar hospital in Ramgarh, where doctors declared him brought dead.Bateshwar Paswan, forest range officer of Mandu, said the bear attack took place deep inside the forest.The forest department has released advance compensation of Rs 25,000 to the victim’s family. Officials said the remaining Rs 3.75 lakh will be paid after the completion of documentation, in accordance with govt provisions.Two days ago, the state cabinet approved Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased in cases of man-animal conflicts. Officials, however, said that the decision will come into force once it is notified in the official gazette. “Initially, we have provided Rs 25,000. Based on the govt’s directive, we will provide appropriate compensation,” said an official.
