Chatra: Administrative work has gained pace for the proposed Babasaheb Dr B R Ambedkar University in Chatra, with the district administration sending a formal land proposal to the state higher and technical education department. The proposed site is in Simaria, close to the industrial towns of Tandwa, Piparwar and Bachra, which house major power generation units and Central Coalfields Limited coal mining projects. Deputy commissioner Ravi Anand said the university would create major educational opportunities for families in these areas and reduce their dependence on distant cities for higher studies. The state govt had asked the district administration to make 50 acres available for the university. Accordingly, land has been earmarked in a Gairmazarua area under Simaria and the proposal was recently forwarded to the department.Anand said all required details and documents related to land selection had been completed. A technical team from the department is expected to inspect the site soon. The land transfer process will move ahead after the team’s approval. The absence of a university in Chatra forces students to travel to Hazaribag, Ranchi, Gaya and other cities for higher education. For economically weaker families, studying outside the district often becomes financially difficult.Officials said the proposed university is expected to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, research and employment-oriented education. Educationists said it could transform the district’s academic environment and improve access to quality higher education.
