Ranchi: Illegal activities, including sex rackets operating in hotels, lodges and guesthouses across the city, has emerged as a serious concern, with residents raising questions about the effectiveness of enforcement measures and compliance by accommodation providers. The matter has gained fresh attention after police on Tuesday busted an alleged sex racket operating in Harmu area and arrested six persons, including two women from West Bengal, allegedly involved in the illegal activity. The raid was carried out following a tip-off, and three customers and the guesthouse owner were also arrested. The incident has once again brought into focus the alleged misuse of hotels, lodges, guesthouses and rented accommodations. In the past few months, police have conducted several raids across the city, uncovering prostitution and trafficking rackets operating from such establishments. In Sept last year, city police had proposed guidelines for the operation of hotels, lodges and guesthouses to curb unlawful activities. The measures included stricter verification of guests, maintenance of records and enhanced cooperation with law enforcement agencies. However, several establishments allegedly continue to flout norms.A suspected terrorist was also arrested from a lodge in Lower Bazar area last year, compelling residents to ask for stringent actions and better monitoring of such establishments.Ranchi SSP Rakesh Ranjan said clear guidelines are in place for hotel and guesthouse owners and warned of stringent action against violators. “Instructions have already been issued to all hotels, lodge and guesthouse operators not to allow any illegal activities on their premises. Despite this, if anyone is found involved in or facilitating such activities, strict legal action will be taken against them,” he said.SP (city) Paras Rana said that regular inspections and surprise raids are being conducted to identify establishments involved in unlawful activities. “Whenever police get tip-off about such illegal activities, raids are conducted to nab offenders and it will be continued,” he added.
