Jamshedpur: Commuters will have to face traffic congestion for three more months while travelling on the Mango bridge, Mango-Dimna road, and Mango-Azadnagar road as the flyover project here, originally scheduled for completion by March and later revised to June, is now expected to become functional by August, officials said on Wednesday.Officials from the state road construction department (RCD) said that constructing the girder near Payal Cinema is becoming time-consuming.“Excluding the girder, the project work is nearing completion. With about 80% of the work over, the flyover is expected to become functional by late July or early August,” said Deepak Sahay, executive engineer of the RCD, Jamshedpur division.Notably, deputy commissioner (DC) Rajiv Ranjan has directed RCD officials to accelerate the pace of work and ensure the flyover is completed within a time frame.During a physical inspection of the under-construction bridge-cum-flyover on May 18, the DC had asked officials and the executing agency to ensure the structural quality is not compromised. “The Mango flyover is a crucial project for regional traffic management. It will significantly reduce traffic congestion on city streets,” Ranjan said.The 2.8km-long flyover is divided into two sections — the stretch from Dimna Road to Sakchi will feature four lanes, while the section from Mango to Purulia Road near Payal Cinema will have two lanes.According to the design, the Mango roundabout will serve as the main junction to efficiently handle the increased traffic volume. A total of 57 pillars have been erected to support the massive structure.The Gujarat-based agency, Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt. Ltd, is constructing the flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 461 crore. Construction began in Sept 2024 and was initially slated for completion by March 2026. However, technical glitches and heavy traffic movement along the construction site delayed the project.Residents stated that the flyover will finally relieve them of chronic traffic woes.“Children often get late to school, office-goers miss their timings, and critically-ill patients or accident victims face dangerous delays in reaching hospitals on time. All of this is due to the constant traffic congestion,” said Mukhtar Alam, brand ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under the Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC).
