Jamshedpur: More than three months after the revised Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 came into force on April 1, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) is yet to implement the mandated four-bin segregation system across its jurisdiction.The rules require households and commercial establishments to segregate waste at source into four categories, replacing the earlier wet-dry two-bin system. The framework aims to improve processing, boost recycling and reduce pollution.Green bins are for wet or biodegradable waste such as food leftovers, vegetable peels and other organic waste. Blue bins are for dry waste, including paper, plastic, glass and metal. Black bins are for hazardous or special waste such as bulbs, expired medicines, paint containers and e-waste. Red bins are for sanitary waste, including used sanitary napkins, diapers and similar discards.JNAC municipal commissioner Yogendra Prasad said the civic body has begun preparations. “Public awareness is the key to successful implementation. Once residents become familiar with the new segregation system, we will deploy dedicated refuse collection vehicles with separate compartments for door-to-door collection of different categories of waste,” Prasad said.He said penalties for non-compliance would follow awareness efforts. “We have distributed four colour-coded bins to a few households as a pilot initiative, but it is only a token beginning. The new system will be implemented in a phased manner,” he said.Nearly 470 metric tonnes of waste is generated daily in the JNAC area. Around 300 metric tonnes come from the Tata Steel command area, and 170 tonnes from outside it.
