Ranchi: Over 50,000 motorists have faced penalties over the past fortnight during the special drive against traffic violations in the city, with the number touching 51,956 till Monday. Wrong parking, riding without helmets and speeding are among the common violations, officers said.On Monday, traffic police personnel imposed fines on 3,983 people, out of whom 2,111 were penalised for riding without helmets, 1,299 for violating no-parking rules and 109 for speeding. Other violations included, 143 cases of jumping red light, 65 for riding in no-entry zone, 58 for not having driving licences, 35 for drunk driving and 22 for wrong-side driving.Traffic police have warned motorists against using the registration plates of other vehicles, adding that if caught, FIRs will be registered against them, their vehicles seized and they will be sent to jail.SP (traffic), Rakesh Singh, said, “Earlier, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers were mostly penalised for flouting no-parking rules, particularly near road crossings, but the trend is changing in the recent days. Many people out for shopping in the evening are parking their vehicles on roads to avoid walking some distance from the designated parking sites. This is leading to congestion on the roads, which are already under considerable vehicle pressure.”He added that riding without helmets and with sub-standard helmets leads to higher fatalities in accidents.In view of the parking issues, traffic police also held a meeting with shopkeepers recently and asked them to ensure that vehicles of their customers are not parked on the road outside their shops.The drive to check traffic violations by drivers of four-wheelers, two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws began in the city on June 1. Police stated that the drive will continue.
