Ramgarh officials, police and NHAI inspect accident-prone Chutupalu valley stretch on NH-33, plan safety measures and new alignment

Ramgarh: A high-level team comprising officials from the district administration, police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) led by Ramgarh deputy commissioner Rituraj, on Friday, inspected the 5-km accident-prone stretch passing through Chutupalu valley on the Ranchi-Hazaribag section of NH-33 and discussed short-term and long-term measures to curb frequent road accidents. The team, which also included Ramgarh SP Mukesh Kumar Lunayat, NHAI project officials, technical experts and engineers, inspected several black spots where repeated accidents have led to loss of life and property and often disrupted vehicular movement through the valley.Ramgarh DC Rituraj said the administration and NHAI would work together to implement necessary changes along the five-km stretch. “NHAI has already been directed to examine technical and highway design issues,” he said.“We have made plans to make the five-km danger zone safer for smooth and accident-free movement of vehicles on this busy highway,” the DC added.Plans include installation of speedometers to monitor vehicle speed, which is one of the major causes of frequent accidents, improved lighting system at intervals of every 200 metres among others. He further said that the road along the dangerous stretch would be widened and the administration would initiate the land acquisition process soon.Ramgarh SP said police personnel would be deployed to monitor vehicles violating traffic rules and assist commuters to ensure safer travel through the valley.Meanwhile, NHAI official Vijay Kumar told TOI that the detailed project report (DPR) for a new highway alignment has been finalised and the process for floating tenders is underway. “The new highway will replace the existing curved stretch through Chutupalu valley. It won’t have the sharp curves where most accidents occur. Once construction of the new straight road between Chutupalu and Ramgarh is completed, the problem of frequent accidents will be solved,” Kumar said.He said that poles have already been installed for speed-monitoring equipment, which will facilitate online challans for over-speeding vehicles in the valley. “Over-speeding is the prime cause of accidents here,” he warned.
