Ranchi: With vibrant chariots, devotional chants and bustling fairgrounds set to return, the city is getting into the festive spirit ahead of the annual Rath Yatra. From the historic Jagannath Temple to the fair grounds, preparations have gathered pace for the grand procession on Thursday, which is expected to draw nearly 10 lakh devotees over the 10 days of the festival, officials said.Temple authorities, artisans and the Ranchi administration are working simultaneously to ensure the celebrations are organised smoothly. The ceremonial Mahasnan of Lord Jagannath was held on June 29 using 153 pitchers of water, after which the deity remained in seclusion for 15 days before Netrotsav on Wednesday. The return chariot procession is scheduled for July 26.A major attraction of the festival, the 40-ft-high wooden chariot, is also nearing completion. Refurbishment work, which began on Akshay Tritiya, is being carried out by 11 craftsmen from Odisha along with local artisans. Built in the style of the rath in Puri, the eight-wheeled chariot is crafted from sal, jamun and mango wood and features a Ratna Singhasan, decorative motifs and 32 brass bells donated by devotees.“The Rath Yatra is a centuries-old tradition that continues with the same rituals followed in Puri. Every year, artisans, devotees and volunteers come together to prepare for this festival with immense devotion,” said priest Thakur Sudhanshu Nath Shahdeo.The district administration has also stepped up preparations, with plans for CCTV surveillance, barricading, dedicated entry and exit routes, uninterrupted power supply and rain contingency measures. “The Rath Yatra is an important religious and cultural event. All departments have been directed to work in coordination so devotees can participate safely and without inconvenience,” deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri said during a review of the arrangements.
