Ranchi: Three weeks after being evicted in a drive by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), vendors from the Morabadi market were allocated a temporary trading site near Tagore Hill on Saturday.While the temporary setup brought some relief to the displaced traders, it created major traffic snarls in the area later in the day. A downpour in the afternoon further slowed vehicular movement.With vendors parking their autorickshaws and carts along the roadside, nearly half of the thoroughfare was blocked, severely disrupting traffic movement in the area, locals claimed.Space constraints also added to the chaos. Vendors claimed that while more than 1,200 of them used to set up shop at Morabadi during the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, only about 500 managed to find space at the new location.Earlier this week, mayor Roshni Khalkho visited the spot to inspect its suitability for rehabilitation. Despite the market being allowed to operate for the time being, local ward councillor Amit Munda cautioned that the area would not be permitted to transition into a permanent vending zone.“The land is a Jatra Sthal, a traditional venue for tribal gatherings and festivals. Since the land remains vacant when there are no events and the market operates only twice a week, we are allowing the vendors to set up shop for the time being,” Munda said.He added that the arrangement is strictly temporary to protect livelihoods until the civic body finds an alternative site.The vendors, though relieved to get a place to sell their produce, expressed dissatisfaction with the new site as it lacks basic amenities like drinking water and toilet facilities. They also complained of a significant drop in footfall compared with the previous location.Amarnath Sahu, a farmer from Boreya, said that they would prefer to return to the old spot as citizens were aware of the haat there, whereas the new location is now drawing very few customers.Another farmer, Sita Devi, said, “The previous spot had public toilets and drinking water facilities. Their absence here is causing severe inconvenience.”
