Ranchi: The Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) on Monday conducted a fire safety mock drill and patient evacuation exercise to strengthen disaster preparedness and train health care workers in responding to fire and other emergencies within the hospital. The exercise was held at the super-speciality block and Dental College campus. Around 200 participants, including doctors, medical officers, junior and senior residents, nursing and paramedical staff, SAP personnel, police, home guards and outsourced workers, took part. The drill simulated a fire emergency, demonstrating coordinated response protocols, safe evacuation of patients and effective use of firefighting equipment. Fire department personnel showcased the operation of extinguishers and a hydraulic bucket lift used to rescue patients and staff trapped on upper floors. Health care workers also practised evacuating critically ill patients using stretchers and wheelchairs before shifting them to designated assembly points.Additional medical superintendent of Rims Shailesh Tripathi, who supervised the exercise, said, “Hospitals cannot afford to be unprepared for emergencies. The objective of this drill was to familiarise doctors, nurses and support staff with standard emergency response procedures so that they can act quickly and in coordination during any fire or disaster.”Officials said the training was aimed at improving response time, minimising panic and ensuring the safety of patients, attendants and hospital staff during emergencies.Rims authorities said similar fire safety drills and emergency preparedness programmes will now be organised every quarter to reinforce safety protocols and keep hospital staff prepared for unforeseen incidents. The institute said the initiative was part of its efforts to strengthen disaster management systems and improve overall patient safety across the campus.
