Sendra fest observed without hunting: DFO

Jamshedpur: A two-week long awareness drive led to a low turnout at the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary (DWS) during the Buru Sendra festival this year, forest officials here said on Monday. Unlike previous years, no wild animal was hunted this time as the tribal people who entered the sanctuary did not carry any weapons.“Buru Sendra Parv evoked thinner crowd and encouragingly none carried any weapons. People who came to observe the annual ritual did not cause harm to any animals,” Saba Alam, the divisional forest officer of DWS, said.Alam said awareness drive was carried out across 86 villages located on the foothills of the sanctuary. “From Saturday, vehicles were checked in 12 check-points which were put up along 20 separate routes. Some traps and ropes were seized during checking, but that were insignificant in number,” Alam said.Dalma Raja Rakesh Hembram, the head of Dalma Buru Sendra Samiti, said, “Whether animals were hunted will be known when the people return from the hill. But as of now, there is no report of hunting of wild animals.”The forest officials have said that Eco Village Committee (EVC) volunteers played a key role in preventing hunting enthusiasts from killing wild animals. The traditional bow and arrow were allowed inside DWS as ritual followers performed special prayers with the conventional arms. However, modern sophisticated weapons and explosives were prohibited.
