Ranchi: Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has launched a stricter safety and enforcement drive across the city, directing field engineers to prevent unsafe low tension (LT) connections, substandard wiring and unauthorised use of electricity.In an official communication issued on Thursday to all superintending, executive and assistant electrical engineers, Manmohan Kumar, general manager, JBVNL Electric Supply Area, Ranchi, ordered rigorous compliance with safety and quality standards while releasing new LT service connections and inspecting existing installations.Kumar told TOI, “These measures are critical to ensuring public safety, ensuring reliable power supply, and preventing electrical accidents arising out of defective or improper LT connections.”“All officers have been directed to strictly adhere to the quality and safety standards while providing new LT connections as well as during inspection of existing service connections,” he said.The directives make protective devices mandatory for every LT connection. Consumers must install miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and earth leakage circuit breakers to protect premises against overload, short circuit and electric shock.Field staff have also been told to use only ISI-marked, high quality service wires suitable for the sanctioned load of each consumer. Use of undersized or poor quality wires has been prohibited to avoid overheating, voltage drop and fire risk.JBVNL has also barred consumers from extending electricity supplied under one sanction to adjoining houses, shops, buildings or plots.Anyone needing power at more than one location must apply for separate connections. The discom further said electricity must be used only for the category for which it has been approved, whether domestic, commercial, industrial or agricultural, and consumption must remain within the sanctioned load.Engineers have been instructed not to release connections where internal wiring is unsafe, nonstandard or haphazard. Compliance will be checked during meter installation, maintenance visits and regular field inspections.Kumar cautioned that violations found during inspections will be corrected immediately, and legal action will be taken under the Electricity Act, 2003, and the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission Supply Code. Negligence by company staff will invite strict disciplinary action.
